My New York City

Terrific for visiting, terrible for living

The tall building on the left is 301 East 34th Street, where I lived for six months during 1997-98. I had a one bedroom apartment on fourth floor — at $1,650 a month! Though it's a doorman building, it's not as good as it looks: paper thin doors, noisy neighbors, drafty windows, lousy bathroom, etc. — after a few weeks, I hated it.

But the building was in a good and safe neighborhood, called Murray Hill and is on the same street as the Empire State Building, easily seen in the back. This great building was only six blocks away and I used to go over to it almost every time on my nocturnal city walks and admire it.

While I no longer want to live in New York City, I shall always love visiting it — for good and bad, there's nothing like it on earth.

Another view

My building seen from the other side, one block west towards the Empire State.

Another building on my street, just a block west, taken from the exact same spot as the photo above. Yes, it is good we have tight Government control of all building projects, huh? Just imagine what horrors greedy developers and evil landlords would impose on us if the Government allowed them to do whatever they wanted with their property.
